Sony’s done a poor job keeping a lid on the impending release of those two new Sony Readers. But at last, after leaked shots and even a full spec sheet, the Big S has come out and confirmed the pair. Dubbed the Sony Reader Pocket and Sony Reader Touch, each one crams in a load of extras and at a price that’s a direct challenge to Amazon and Cool–er. Read on and get the full skinny now.
The Sony PRS–300 and PRS–600 have both been rechristened as the Pocket and Touch respectively. And both are sticking with the features we saw outed yesterday, as well as those already well–worn price tags.
The Sony Reader Pocket will tote at 5–inch screen, 512MB on on–board storage which won’t be expandable, no Wi–Fi (although it is coming) and USB 2.0. The screen isn’t touchy feely, but at $200 (£120), it’ll be going against the likes of the Elonex and Cool–er eBooks. UK pricing will doubtless push this up though.
New Sony Readers: full specs revealed
For feature fans, the Sony Reader Touch, which replaces the much–loved Sony Reader PRS–505, comes packing a 6–inch touchscreen, 512MB of memory which can be pumped up by SD. It also has an Oxford English Dictionary, with the backlighting stripped out to make the touchscreen more iPhone–like. Again, no Wi-Fi, but Sony is saying a web version is on the cards.
The Touch is set to cost $300 (£175) when it lands alongside the Pocket later this month, with both doubtless strutting their stuff at gadget fest IFA over in Berlin. The prices do sound great, but you can bet that unwritten rule of everything costing twice as much here in Blighty will kick in as soon as they make landfall here. We’re chasing Sony for an official UK price, so stay tuned for more as we get it.
