MiFi wireless modemThe 3 network has just pulled the wrappers off MiFi, a mobile Wi-Fi device that allows you to connect any Wi-Fi equipped device to the web no matter where you are.

MiFi is essentially a phone-sized modem which hooks up to 3′s 3G network. It will then act as a portable Wi-Fi hotspot, enabling any Wi-Fi compatible device – laptop, PMP, PSP, Nintendo DS etc. – to access the Internet. Sounds quite handy for those times when a proper Wi-Fi hotspot isn’t within range. An eight-digit network key prevents others hopping onto your hotspot.

3 says MiFi will be available before Christmas 2009, with pricing announced closer to launch.

Three should concentrate on communication between their offices and tech support ppl. I have just got back online after NO internet for a week, with three telling me there is nothing wrong and sending me another dongle, which arrived broken. I am in a relatively poor signal area, but can still reach top speed of about 3.2mbps. Went to the shop in town and got told they are working on it. Serious lack of communication somewhere…………….
They should supply the mi-fi to people who have problems connecting to the net for free. Same as the aerial which can be bought from some shops.
    Just my tuppence worth

A dedicated 3G router is a great idea a lot of people who want a roaming lifestyle and live off grid but want to access the internet.

The only drawback is the limited amount of data available 5GB so you are still limited. come on 3 upgrade your data speeds and give us more bandwidth then we may have truly mobile internet.

Not a good product. I had the old black and green dongle from 3 and I was quite happy with the speed ect. I got myself a new wireless laptop and upgraded to the Mifi dongle as I was sick of the cables. The battery life is pathetic and three months in it died on me over xmas. I went to visit a 3 shop and they arranged a replacement (not battery or charger as this isn’t included under warranty) Ok its working but I never understood why it kept on loosing signal. I mentioned this to 3 and the device has a very stupid “time out” setting that can not be changed by the user. So if you come home, turn on your lappy check your mail and then busy yourself for 30 mins your Mifi switches it self off to save you money! This I find totally annoying….does anyone know how to change this?? I am now stuck on a 12 month contract with a dongle that is inconvenient and really slow!
