iphone-3gs5Predictions have already started swirling about Apple overtaking Nokia in the battle for smartphone supremacy by 2011. And new figures suggest Cupertino is already surging ahead, with Nokia hitting the skids at the same time. So how do the two rivals square up? Read on to find out.

We already know that sales of the iPhone have jumped a whacking 626 per cent in a year. But new stats from the bods at Strategy Analytics says that compared with a decline of 15 per cent for Nokia.

And the news only gets worse for Nokia. LG and Samsung have seen rises of 8 and 14 per respectively. Both Korean giants have been hard at it in 2009 unleashing the likes of the LG Arena and Samsung i8910HD. Nokia, by comparison, took a colossal 7 months to kick the N97 out of the door.

Nokia’s five–point plan to topple Apple

It’s not all doom and gloom for the Finns though. Nokia is still the number one mobile player, with 37.8 per cent. That compares to Apple’s measly 2 per cent. Apple, however, does only sell the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS.

Nokia is doubtless in need of some fresh new ideas to get things going. Perhaps the N97 Mini is the next step towards getting back at Apple.
