A pair of hackers have revealed a crippling vulnerability across several leading smartphone platforms, including the iPhone, Android and Windows Mobile that could lead to your phone being hijacked just by receiving a text message.
Speaking at the Black Hat conference in Las Vegas, computer experts Charlie Miller and Collin Mulliner claimed an exploit could allow an iPhone to be taken over or booted off a network, and have already created software which has achieved this on European and American networks.
It’s a scary prospect since there’s little you can do to stop receiving a text message, but the pair are highlighting the problem in the hopes that Apple and Microsoft will iron out the kinks and sew up the holes. Google has already solved the problem in Android.
“If we don’t talk about it, somebody is going to do it silently,” Mr Mulliner said. So, iPhone owners don’t fret yet, but here’s hoping Apple gets a move on on this one.
