FiveTV channel Five is joining Project Canvas, the BBC’s master-plan to bring on-demand internet TV to sitting rooms and tellies across the land, leaving just Channel 4 as the only terrestrial broadcaster left out in the cold.

Five, purveyor of Nazi documentaries and more CSI series than you could care to count, has just joined the BBC, BT and ITV backed Project Canvas, which aims to bring on-demand services like BBC iPlayer to Freeview and Freesat boxes up and down the country. Only Channel 4 has yet to commit, though it is known to be seriously considering it.

Microsoft is also tipped to be joining Project Canvas, with managing director Ashley Highfield admitting he might prep a launch once the MSN Video Player has rolled out.

After months of eyeing Hulu and others across the pond, things are finally heating up here. Bring on the competition we say, and let’s hope Project Canvas doesn’t suffer the same fate as Kangaroo.
