There’s no denying that the Nikon D5000 is an awesome looking piece of kit. That swivel screen and sharp, DSLR style, make it a winner for those who love their gadgets sleek and sexy. But underneath that lush frame the D5000 has more than enough to sate your inner geek: think 12–megapixel stills, 18-55mm lens, 720p HD movies and of course, that LCD round the back.
Essentially, the D5000 has the soul of a different Nikon snapper, the D300. It’s a semi–pro effort packing the same 12–megapixel sensor but lacking the D5000′s calling card, the tilting screen. The LCD quality and burst speed can’t match the heftily priced D300 either, but the high sensitivity and and D–Lighting make it every bit as worthy of your lustful gaze.
The aforementioned swivel screen is very cool and clever. It means the D5000 is capable of shooting those HD films or taking quick shots overhead in crowds, or even round corners. It’s as easy as switching the darn thing on.
There’s built in RAW features, plus editing and retouching. Chuck in an HDMI port for getting your Oscar worthy efforts straight from your D5000 to your TV and say goodbye to your PC’s high end software.
The D5000′s screen does grate after a while though. The autofocus doesn’t work when shooting film and is a tad low res for our liking. It also suffers from glare in bright light. OLED’s where it’s at chaps.
Nikon can always be relied on for great snappers, thanks to it having no other distractions. It just makes cameras, and there’s no doubting the D5000 is one of their best.
