Nintendo is already firing flicks into Japanese homes. But the days of us using the Wii’s BBC iPlayer channel as a way to forget being frozen out from the movie action appear to be over. According to movie studio Lionsgate, Nintendo is lining up a Wii movie store for some global action “soon.” Read on to find just what that means for your Ninty hub.
Lionsgate’s Curt Mavis, who looks after the Hollywood studio’s digital media gubbins, has been pretty forthcoming about a potential Wii movie store. Chatting with CasualGaming.biz, the mogul claimed that he “imagine[d] the Wii’s movie store will launch worldwide soon.”
Warming to his theme, he claimed that the Wii could easily go toe–to–toe with offerings on the Xbox 360 and PS3, largely thanks to its appeal to everyone from screaming toddlers to trendy Grannies. “Our horror and action movies are ideal for the Xbox and PlayStation’s hardcore audience,” he said. “The broader audience of the Wii are likely to enjoy our more mass-market properties.”
For the Wii movie store to really succeed and smash the domination of its Microsoft and Sony rivals, the console will surely need a new, more capacious hard drive. And how about hi–def movies? If Mavis is on the money, then expect plenty of hype about a Wii HD to follow.
