TwitterWe love a good bit of realtime blogging over on Twitter, but we’re sick of all the spammers tweeting us with promises to make money through the service, or gain thousands of followers in a week. Now Twitter has had enough of them too, and culled a huge number of the pesky twammers in an update to the site.

Twitter’s had a tweak of its mechanics to make sure that the follower count precisely shows how many people are tuning in to your tweets about breakfast and the traffic on the M1 southbound, and as a byproduct, it’s booting off spam Twitter followers who mass follow others in the hopes that they’ll be followed back.

That means that if you’ve got a large tribe of Twitter disciples, you could see a big drop today, although you won’t really be reaching any fewer people: did you really think those Twitter spambots were soaking up your 140 character pearls of wisdom?

If you were in fear of losing legitimate followers though you can set fears aside: the social butterflies over on Mashable all seem to have noticed a proportional drop, with no genuine Twitter followers affected. Still, shout up if you find yourself tweeting to no one all of a sudden.
