The Samsung Tocco Ultra wants to keep you sweet. While some phones give you a fixed set of features and menus, the Tocco Ultra lets you shuffle its offerings around, using Samsung’s TouchWiz interface. There’s also a gorgeous touchscreen and whopping 8 megapixel camera. It has the potential to be Samsung’s best handset yet, if only there weren’t so many rough edges.
The first snag you’ll notice is the price of actually owning a Tocco Ultra Edition It’s all very well having HSDPA, full web browsing and a slide-out keypad, but unless you’re prepared to fork out a fair chunk each month you’ll need to pay almost £350 to get hold of one.
Sure, for the money you’ll get a phone with GPS, an OLED screen, and one of the most customisable mobile interfaces ever made: TouchWiz even lets you move your network operator’s name if you don’t like it living at the top of the screen. However, we still have niggling doubts.
For a start the Samsung Tocco Ultra isn’t a smartphone. That means no apps to download, and in turn, a lot less value for money overall.
There’s also a shocking lack of Wi-Fi. How Samsung can excuse this, we’re not sure, but it’s a glaring omission and one which knocks serious points off the Tocco Ultra’s score.
The camera also suffers from severe shutter lag too, frequently missing the action by being too slow on the uptake. And then there’s the texting system – we dare you not to be bemused when you first try to tap out a message.
A stylish phone then, and with plenty of neat touches, but with more than a few major failings too. You’ll find better elsewhere.
