Modern Warfare 2The mighty Modern Warfare 2 will be kicking it on the PS3 and Xbox 360 from 11 November. But at a frankly obscene £54.99, who exactly is going to stump up for its uber–violent oeuvre? Activision says the price is down to the weak pound, but one analyst thinks it’s all “a test”. Keep reading to find out just what he means.

Gamers were flabbergasted when Activision slapped a £54.99 price tag on Modern Warfare 2 here in Blighty. While that cost will doubtless come down once the supermarkets and online retail giants get going, it’s still a huge price to pay. But Activision’s claims that this all due to our floundering economy aren’t fooling analyst Michael Pachter.

He says it’s all down to Activision testing to see what you lot make of its strategy when it comes to Modern Warfare 2. “Activision knows it has a ‘hot’ game, knows that the market will pay an additional 10 per cent, and has decided to increase the price accordingly,” he says.

Modern Warfare 2 bundled with night vision

Pachter thinks this could go two ways. Either punters kick off over Modern Warfare 2′s price and Activision gets in serious trouble. Or everyone hands over their cash and games across the board soar in price.

Activision has not said a peep about Modern Warfare 2′s price since it announced how much it would be. But what do you think? Is £54.99 too much? Remember you can mouth off over in Electricpig Forum now.

That price is ridiculous, we should not buy or else the prices will start sky rocketing.

The RRP of new PS3 games is £49.99 but no-one pays more than £40.00 in the shops or on the internet!! Why will this game be any different!?

If anyone buys this for £54.99 in store they are mad. I’m sure you will be able to buy this online for £39.99 max. I wouldn’t be suprised that Sainsbury will be stocking it for £39.99 as they have done with a number of titles now.
Personally I’m not that bothered about getting this on day 1. I’ll wait for a price drop if its not discounted online

The brainwashed morons will still queue up for it. Activision knows this.

We don’ live in a just world, you can pickup Killzone2 for £20 (sometimes cheaper), and it’s 10x better than COD will ever be…

The COD series has stagnated, and it’s hampered by the lowest common denominator, the XBox360,with it’s last-gen DVD drive, and it’s lack of standard HDD.

Well of course that is only fair, after all they did alter the RRP down £35 during the period when the pound was extremely strong and worth more than $2… oh wait, no they didn’t! It wouldn’t surprise me if the greedy b*stards up the map packs from £7.99 to £9.99 too! And then would stay that way even when the economy improves…

I would hope the sales of this game would be weak as a result, but the fact is most people with cough up the extra fiver (it’ll probably be £45 at it’s cheapest online, and take longer to come down in price) – which would set a worrying trend. A compromise would be to buy it but then make sure you make your disapproval known on blogs and forums, hopefully enough anti-Activision internet chatter will build up to make them think twice about doing it again. Or better yet delay buying it for a couple of weeks after launch, just long enough to set tounges wagging and give the CEO some ‘squeaky bum time’!

The sad thing about this is at it’s extreme it could effect Indie devs and new IP’s in the future, people pay so much for the mainstream sequels that they have less to spend in indie titles or new quirky IPs, which is ultimately bad for the industry.

Everything I hear coming out of Activision lately makes me dislike them – from corporate willy waving about wanting the PS3 to be cheaper and wanting to pay less royalities, to rip off pricing policies and obscene ‘special edition’ verisons. They are rapidly becoming my least favourite games company…

P.S. Don’t get me started on £70 tin case version with art book, or the £120 one with a naff toy version NVG’s!!!

its a joke that they are trying to scam us out of more money. The gaming industry is the only not affected by the recession. And how do they help all the others who are? By increasing the prices. Its disgusting. I think its about time they started helping the people who have put them where they are. They would be nothing if it werent for the people.

The sooner they realise that, the better. I will definately be boycotting until its at a reasonable price. Lets be honest, there are tons of games out there at affordable prices which will keep us gamers content until activision stop smelling what they are shovelling and start living in the real world.

ACTIVISION ARE WANKERS!!! I HOPE THEY SEE THIS…I WILL BE DOWNLOADING THIS GAME BY THE USE OF TORRENTS SO THESE BASTARDS DONT GET 1 PENNY OF MY MONEY!!
