After a couple of false starts, Google’s swanky mobile operating system is finally getting to run on the hardware it deserves. The Galaxy I7500 is Samsung’s first Android offering while veteran HTC has already had a couple of runs at this. Has the HTC Hero got what it takes to tackle Samsung head on? Read on to find out who’s the victor in the mobile robot wars.
Screen
Both blowers pack 3.2in screens that stretch to a resolution of 320×480 pixels, but HTC has covered its with an anti-fingerprint coating to stop mucky paws smearing up the display. It’s a nice touch, but Samsung takes an early lead by opting for a vivid AMOLED screen instead.

Storage
Easy expansion is the name of the game, with both packing microSD card slots so you can simply slip in extra storage further down the line. Out of the box, Samsung clinches it packing an extra 8GB of storage space tucked away inside.

Camera
There’s little to separate them on the camera front, with both bundling an iPhone beating 5 megapixel auto focus snapper, but once again Samsung edges it by throwing in a flash as well.

Special skills
Samsung’s dirt disguising black finish may appear the smarter choice at first compared to HTC’s bright white, but that’s before you take into account the latter’s non-stick Teflon coating. It’s not just dirt that slides off the Hero, you can say goodbye to greasy finger marks too.

Accessories
There’s no need for headphone adapters on either model as they both sensibly sport proper 3.5mm headphone jacks so you can plug your own cans straight in. The Hero also bundles a digital compass so you’ll always know which way is up, claiming it this round.

Software
Samsung has opted for the latest Cupcake release of Android, which would be all well and good had HTC not gone the extra mile and built its own Sense UI that sits on top of Android. It’s more than just showing off – it’s genuinely useful and brings HTC back in the game.
