Apple LogoApple has announced its third quarter profits, marking an astounding increase in iPhone sales to help push the company to record profits for a non-Christmas quarter.

Apple sold 5.2 million iPhones in the three months to June 27 2009, representing a 626 percent unit growth compared to the previous year.

It’s a huge increase, and one which prompted Apple CEO Steve Jobs to state: “We’re thrilled to have sold over 5.2 million iPhones during the quarter and users have downloaded more than 1.5 billion applications from our App Store in its first year.”

Mac sales are up too, with Apple shifting 2.6 million Macs during the quarter, marking a 4 percent unit increase on the previous year.

It wasn’t all good news though. iPod sales have dipped, with Apple selling 10.2 million of its MP3 players in the quarter. That’s seven percent units down from a year ago.
