Remember Modu? The mini mobile with multiple personalities called “jackets”? Well word on the online street is that it’s due to launch this week, over 18 months after it was first shown off. Read on to get all the details on when you’ll be able to lay your mitts on a Modu.
Modu has been touted by its Isreali inventors as the future of mobile phones. And the idea is certainly clever. You get a small, simple mobile for which you can nab various “jackets”. They’ll then turn it into everything from an MP3 powerhouse to a bizarre fashion accessory.
Now, at last, it’s due to drop in its homeland with a £79 price tag for the phone and one jacket. However, after bigging up its unique powers, the team behind Modu is now being coy about just how many they’ll shift, as the likes of the iPhone 3GS and Nokia N97 continue to dominate.
With no 3G on board, Modu’s head honcho Dev Moran says it’s only aiming to flog a few thousand in Israel before heading out into other countries. Considering it was hyped majorly at last year’s Mobile World Congress, that’s some mighty backtracking.
In that time, the Apple App Store has changed mobile phones forever. The question is, can Modu compete in a world where smartphones are king?
