A UK Kindle may be coming up fast, but the Elonex eBook has hit British Borders bookshops already, and we’ve got one to prove it. It may be lacking the iPod nano-esque colours of the Cool-er and the big name reliability of the Sony Reader, but can the screen – and the books on offer – help it stand out from the crowd? Read on and find out in our hands and eyes-on!
You might remember Elonex from its netbook ventures, but it’s stepping in to a new and rapidly growing market with the Elonex eBook. In many ways, it’s almost identical to the Cool-er eBook we got to grips with a few months back: there’s a 6-inch eInk screen to give your eyes a break, SD slot for extra shelves of book and a control pad tucked away in the bottom right hand corner. The software itself meanwhile is identical, offering varying font sizes, landscape and portrait orientation, and sudoku should you run out of reading material.
War of the words: eBook readers go head to head
Presentation-wise though, the Elonex eBook is a whole lot more stylish than the Cool-er and its dodgy slogan and it’s got the weight of prose powerhouse Borders behind it, so you’ll be able to take advantage of its online store and never have to deal with tatty spines and yellowing pages ever again. The Elonex eBook is out now, but you can check it out in our hands-on gallery before making the trip to the bookshop.
