Tony Hawk RideThe Tony Hawk Ride board controller that skated in to view at E3 will be getting a white lick of paint upon release, leaving it looking an awful lot like a Wii Balance Board. Why the shift from ebony to ivory? Read on and find out.

Tony Hawk Ride developer Josh Tsui let slip in an interview that the black skateboard peripheral that rocked faces at E3 earlier this year is destined for a makeover. “The board we’ve shown so far is like the Darth Vader of skateboards, it’s not the finished peripheral. We’re going with a white board which is more consumer friendly. It’s much more iPod-like for want of a better term,” he told GamesIndustry.biz.

That means if you pick up Tony Hawk Ride on the Wii rather than the PS3 or Xbox 360, it’ll fit right in with the rest of the endless peripheral family, from the similar Wii Balance Board to the forthcoming Wii Vitality Sensor. We’re hoping for a matte finish rather than a plasticky Eee PC you can stand on, but we’ll have to wait and see.

There are no images of the repainted Tony Hawk Ride board just yet, but while it sounds slick, we reckon Activision’s missed a trick here. Imagine how popular it’d be if you could customise your Tony Hawk Ride board with killer skate designs like you would a real one. We spy a business opportunity: anyone want to step in and fill the void?
