You might not live on Skywalker Ranch, but by heaving the LG 50PS8000 into your living room, you’re bringing a bit of Lucas magic into the house. See, it’s THX certified, and guaranteed to push your eyeballs to their very limits.
The Full HD screen comes in peeper-swivelling 50 and 60 inch sizes, and boasts a contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1. But enough numbers, it’s words that’ll really do the 50PS8000 justice. It’s gorgeous, head-swimmingly, mind-numbingly gorgeous.
Images look brighter than Carol Vorderman’s offspring and it’s no snob either, as well as sucking in Full HD footage through four HDMI sockets, it’ll accept DivX files delivered via USB port. What’s more there’s Bluetooth, letting you beam photos from a mobile phone direct to the screen, or hook up wireless stereo headphones.
When it comes to watching a movie, you’ll be hard pressed not to double check you’re not dreaming. Pictures are crisp and fluid, thanks in part to the 600Hz processing inside the 50PS8000. Blacks are deep too, and colours seem to pop from the plasma. But it’s not all plain sailing. At times we spotted some juddering action, even with 600Hz working away inside. There were also dark shades of grey where we could’ve sworn there should be pure black, and while the 50PS8000 is THX certified its sound reproduction still lacks a certain grunt.
But, we must stress, we had to look pretty hard to find those faults, and it’s unlikely you’d install the 50PS8000 and not invest in a full-blown surround system too. Sure, it’s on the pricey side of expensive, but in exchange for the contents of your bank account you’ll be treated to George Lucas-levels of visual clarity. Just try not to watch Jar Jar Binks on it, or the Good Taste Police will come and take it away.
