Teletext, the service bringing you news on your TV long before widgets began invading the screen, is to go off air from next year. That’s two years ahead of schedule, so read on to find out when and why it’s getting credit crunched.
Trusty Teletext is to go the way of Jordan and Peter Andre’s nuptials from January next year, with the news and information service coming to a close on analogue ITV, Channel 4 and Five. Some of Teletext’s digital services will remain intact though, including travel sites like Teletextholidays.co.uk, but it’s buh bye on your old CRT telly in the kitchen.
Daily Mail and General Trust (DMGT), which owns Teletext, says that “current economic conditions” and “the growth in the use of the internet” are part of the reason for the early closure. Ah. Sorry about that Teletext. No hard feelings if we swiped audience from your tech news pages, eh?
