FacebookFacebook has been trying to stamp out Twitter ever since the micro-blogging service began stealing all its web 2.0 buzz, but now the social network giant looks like it’s trying a new strategy instead: making a Facebook Twitter client. If you can’t beat’em, join them, eh? Read on to see how we know.

Inside Facebook has been doing some digging and came across a “test” tweet from Blake Ross, who just so happens to be an engineer at Mark Zuckerberg’s baby. Here’s where it gets interesting though: the Twitter client he used was called “penguin FB”, runs on the Facebook development servers, and has since been deleted.

All these hints point to the possibility that Facebook is preparing to integrate Twitter into the service, potentially letting you broadcast updates from your publisher bar out to your Twitter followers at the same time.

Facebook’s keeping schtum of course, but if true, the ramifications of official Twitter integration are huge. With 250million users, Facebook would instantly become the biggest Twitter client around, overtaking the likes of TweetDeck and Seesmic Desktop within minutes. The question is, would this help or hinder Twitter? Stay tuned: the social networking wars could be about to take a big new twist.
