Bang & Olufsen BeoTime alarm clock flute

Bang & Olufsen is better known as a purveyor of absurdly expensive home entertainment systems, but the Danish audiophile is now venturing into new markets with the BeoTime, the world’s first alarm clock flute. No, that’s not a typo. Alarm clock flute. Read on to find out how much it’ll cost to have this pipe pump you out of bed in the morning.

Until today, Sony had the title of strangest alarm clock of the year, but the Bang & Olufsen BeoTime has ripped the coveted belt from its waist. It may look like a flute, but those keys have screens built in to show the time, and there’s even a tilt sensor so it’ll display the clock at the right angle, no matter what tangled position you wake up in.

You can set the aluminium Bang & Olufsen BeoTime to rouse you with its own alarm chime, or lash it up to your Bang & Olufsen hi-fi to kick you awake with a CD at the time you specify. It’ll work with a Bang & Olufsen TV too, switching it off after a set interval if you like to fall asleep in front of a flick.

That’s already got us playing along to Bang & Olufsen’s tune, but if you still need convincing, the Bang & Olufsen BeoTime is the AV wizard’s idea of an “entry level” product, so it’s cheap too: it’s yours for just $345 (£210). Yeah, more than 200 notes for something that runs off AA batteries. Bargain or bonkers? Vote with your wallet when this hits showrooms next month.
