Moblin, Intel’s jolly little operating system for netbooks, hasn’t had much of a look in since Google announced Chrome OS last week, but it’s fighting back by building in instant-on technology. Say goodbye to boot times!
Even bare bones operating system Moblin takes half a minute or so to boot up on your average netbook, but sometimes, you don’t need everything loaded. That’s where instant-on software comes in, letting you open up a web browser, media viewer or other popular app in just seconds.
Intel’s just partnered up with Phoenix Technologies, which specialises in instant-on software called Hyperspace, promising to bring the ability to Moblin.
That means that any netbook running Moblin will soon be able to jump online in under 10 seconds from hitting the power button – a very tempting proposition, especially since Google thinks the future of programs is through the web browser.
There are no details on when the improvements will make it to Moblin, but Intel’s got a good few months to get in ahead of Google Chrome OS’s 2010 release.
