It looks like that whispers that Microsoft Office 2010 would be unveiled tonight are legit: Microsoft “accidentally” published the website for the next version of its software suite, and yes, it’s headed to the cloud.
Redmond was rumoured to be priming a big announcement for tonight – part of the reason why Google rushed out the Chrome OS news seemingly at random – and it looks like Microsoft Office 2010 might just be it. How do we know? Microsoft set the site live over at microsoft.com/office/2010 for several hours yesterday before taking it down.
You’d hope that Steve Ballmer knows about Google Cache though, because the Microsoft Office 2010 site is still very much up for viewing. There are lots of placeholders, presumably for instructional videos, but what we do know for certain now is that you’ll be able to access Microsoft Office 2010 from your browser.
What does that mean? Potentially as soon as next month, Google Docs will have a serious rival that lets you “work with multiple people from different locations at the exact same time”, and even edit photos online.
It is possible that Microsoft is saving Microsoft Office 2010 for another day, but don’t be surprised if you get word of a beta version shortly.
