MacBook ProThis could be it folks. The much–vaunted Apple netbook is back as the hottest ingredient in the Cupertino rumour mill. New reports point to an October release for a touchscreen, netbook–style machine which you’ll be able to snag for $800 Stateside. Want to know more about the Apple netbook? You’d better hop in and keep reading.

Talk of an Apple netbook has persisted for months, in spite of Steve Jobs dissing the little blighters when questioned about Apple’s plans for one last year. But now China Times is reporting that a 9.7–inch netbook will be landing in October, rocking a touchscreen.

That size certainly doesn’t fit with the current 10.2–inch competitors it would have to face. But Apple is said to have placed orders with Wintek to produce the screens, while Foxconn, which makes the iPhone, will produce the Apple netbook itself.

Although this touchscreen beast is being dubbed the Apple netbook, the China Times report stresses that some insiders are calling it a tablet too. So what are we looking at? An Asus T101 –style device? Or a monster iPod touch? Only Steve has the definitive answer, and he’s not talking.

As for the OS, can something this size handle Snow Leopard? Or will it just be an even more powerful version of iPhone 3.0? Make sure you mouth off and have your say in the Electricpig Forum now.

One thing is certain. At $800 in the US, the Apple netbook won’t be cheap. Expect it to cost at least £700 here in Blighty.

The best Apple Netbook that Apple does not make is the MSI Wind U100 for less than £300
