Sony’s eco-friendly Bravia KDL-46WE5 doesn’t just save money on your electric bill, it’ll actually save the planet too. See, the KDL-46WE5 uses just 140W of power while your sat in front of it and less than 0.2W while on standby, making it one of the most efficient TVs in the world.
It’s not all beard-stroking and mung bean munching though, the KDL-46WE5 packs in a ton of fancy features, so it’s as much a tech-head’s TV as it is a hippie’s.
There are four HDMI sockets to hook up all your home entertainment kit, 100Hz scanning to smooth out on-screen judders and internet widgets to pull information from the web into your living room.
The KDL-46WE5’s screen looks great too, with a 100,000:1 contrast ratio, powered by an energy efficient hot cathode backlight. Smartest of all, there’s a “presence sensor” built into the TV so it can tell when there’s nobody sat watching it, so it can switch itself off while not in use.
Add to that a light sensor that adjusts screen brightness to ambient conditions and this Bravia’s a seriously energy conscious bit of kit.
All the usual Sony goodies are included too, from virtual surround to Voice Zoom, which clears up sound within vocal ranges, so dialogue is clear, even at low volumes.
On the downside, Sony appears to have taken its green credentials a bit far: even branding the power switch on the Bravia KDL-46WE5 an “Energy Saving Switch”. Bizarrely, it’s also included a Picture Frame Mode, turning the whole TV into a giant slideshow while not in use, and completely undoing all your good energy saving work.
Those quirks aside, it’s a top drawer TV that’ll soothe your eyes, as well as your conscience.
