Google Chrome OS was only announced yesterday, but already the new operating system looking to smash a few of Microsoft’s windows seems to be gathering steam: it’s just announced its first hardware partners, and Asus is on the list. Looks like a Google Chrome OS Eee PC is on the way! Read on to find out what this means for you.
Google’s just announced the first Google Chrome OS partners, which includes Adobe (Read: Flash support) and chipmakers Texas Instruments and Qualcommm, as well as netbook players Hewlett-Packard, Acer, Lenovo, Toshiba and Asus.
Now, a Google Chrome OS powered HP Mini or Acer Aspire One is exciting enough, but the reason a Google Chrome OS Eee PC has us salivating at the prospect is that we know what hardware Asus has to take advantage of. One of the key features of Google Chrome OS is that it can run on low-power ARM and Qualcomm processors as well as Intel systems, and only last month, we saw a Qualcomm Snapdragon Eee PC running Android at the Computex tradeshow in Taiwan.
Ten ways Google Chrome OS can kill off Windows
Not only was this Snapdragon Eee PC seriously slim and capable of chucking out HD video, but because it rinsed so little battery juice, it didn’t even need a fan. In other words, Google Chrome OS would be ninja silent, and a perfect fit on it. You could use it for an entire long haul flight without fear of shutdown.
Given that Google Chrome OS isn’t due for release until next year, don’t expect official word for some time, but given how Asus loves to show off a prototype Eee PC wherever it can, don’t rule it out either.
