iPhone 3GSApple will overtake Nokia in the race for smartphone dominance by 2011, according to a new report by analysts Generator Research. According to the latest findings, with Nokia spreading itself across cheap models and top end cells like the N97, Apple’s iPhone focus will help it climb to the top spot. Read on to find out how they can do it.

Nokia and Apple have been locked in a smartphone war ever since Steve Jobs fondled the first gen iPhone on stage at Macworld 2007. But while Nokia currently enjoys 40 per cent of the smartphone market, thanks to its best–selling N series, Generator says things are about to change.

If the forecasts are correct, Nokia’s share will have dropped to a measly 20 per cent by 2013, with Apple enjoying a mighty 33 per cent. The research bods go on to say that Apple will match Nokia’s smartphone sales as early as 2011, shifting a massive 77 million iPhones in that year alone.

But why the shift towards Apple? Generator reckons Apple’s “Golden Age” is just getting underway. It’s all down to the App Store and a whole generation of iPod owners looking to make the shift to the iPhone. At the same time, Generator claims Nokia will struggle as it puts emphasis on basic blowers rather than smartphones.

It does make sense: Apple has only one phone to focus on while Nokia has hundreds. Obviously, like all analyst research it’s speculatory, a lot can happen in two years, and you need to take a deep breath before believing it all. But with the App Store motoring and the iPhone 3GS doing the business, it’s certainly not far fetched.

Anything which makes Nokia get into gear again is more than welcome, methinks. Nseries are starting to stagnate, S60 needs an overhaul.
