Windows LogoGoogle has the web in a fluster over its plans to take on Microsoft Windows with its own Chrome OS, but the Big M could be about to hit back with a surprise unveiling. Word on the web is there’s something major coming from Microsoft on Monday.

Tech blogger, and former Microsoft evangelist, Robert Scoble has hinted that Google announced Chrome OS early to avoid clashing with a large-scale announcement from Microsoft.

“Why did Google announce Chrome OS this week? Well, of course, Microsoft has a big announcement coming on Monday” he posted to Friendfeed, explaining the lack of detail with a simple “I’m embargoed.”

So what could Microsoft have in store? It’s already set out its operating system wares with Windows 7, so speculation currently centres on a new web browser, dubbed Gazelle.

There’s also talk of Office Web seeing a full public launch, letting business-types tap into their documents wherever they are – a bit like, well, Google Docs.

And then there’s Microsoft’s own cloud computing products. Windows Azure has been announced, but the Big M could be about to add to it. Stay tuned, and we’ll let you know how much of Chrome OS’s shine Microsoft can rub off.

Interesting. Nothing like a down and dirty corporate war to keep us tech geeks happy. As long as both products are top drawer, natch
