Nokia N97Apple and Nokia, both sworn mobile enemies, are each said to be plotting projector phones for a 2010 release. Can either gadget giant take on the Samsung i7410 pico projector phone and win? Read on to find out just what they’re beavering away on.

The idea of an Apple or Nokia projector phone might not be as far fetched as tech hounds might like to think. Reports coming out of Taiwan, quoting sources”close to handset manufacturers,” suggest that Foxlink, whose parent company Foxconn are behind the iPhone, have already got an in–phone projector ready to go.

In fact, they’ve sent samples out to clients, which they say could mean an Apple or Nokia projector phone starting production as soon as the end of 2009. That would mean a 2010 release. Nokia is said to have “strong business relationships” with Foxlink, so a high–end Nokia projector phone isn’t out of the question.

Both Apple and Nokia will be well aware of Samsung’s i7410 projector phone, first spotted at CES in January. Adding a pico projector would be the next logical step for multimedia mobiles, letting punters unleash hours of video shackled currently shackled to their blowers tiny screens.

Do you really think Apple would use the same bulky projector technology as Samsung? Apple = cool and there is nothing cool about a bulky, low resolution, manual focus projector. If Apple is smart, and I believe they are very smart, they will go with something much better – the technology from Microvision appears superior is every way except perhaps cost in the short run. If Nokia wants to compete in smart phones with Apple and the others – they better use the best as well.
