LG logoAn LG “Black Label” phone will drop in Q4 this year to take on the iPhone, according to LG’s mobile head honcho. LG is certainly aiming high, but just what OS does it plan to do it with? Android perhaps?

Despite marketing suggesting otherwise, LG’s recent touchscreen phones (the LG Arena and Viewty Smart, for instance) under the Black Label banner haven’t been iPhone rivals purely because they haven’t been smartphones. Now though, LG’s South Korean president of mobile business, Ahn Seung-kwon, says a Black Label LG phone will launch in the fourth quarter of 2009 to compete with the iPhone.

Now, could this be one of the three LG Android handsets promised this year? Or will it be a phone that works with LG’s forthcoming app store? LG hasn’t said yet, but Ahn also let slip some more juicy mobile gossip. Not only is a third LG Prada handset on the way, LG is planning a wider extrreme luxury range, like Nokia’s Vertu. LG must see those supposed “green shoots” in the economy we suppose, but we’d take an LG iPhone rival over a model decked out in gold just for the sake of it any day.
