iphone-3gs-official-photos-5Still waiting to un-manacle your iPhone 3GS handset from O2? Help is almost at hand. There’s no unlock yet, but the promise of an unlock, akin to that being enjoyed by iPhone / iPhone 3G users, is well on its way. An exploit has been found, meaning it’s just a matter of time before Ultrasn0w can free your speedy iPhone 3GS.

The exploit is known in iPhone hacking circles as the 24Kpwn exploit. Interestingly, it was first used on the iPod Touch 2G, and the loophole has carried over on to the iPhone 3GS.

The iPhone Dev Team points out that, normally, Apple programmers play “cat&mouse” with known exploits – as in, once the hacking community has found and identified them, Apple closes them down in future software updates. This time it seems the 24Kpwn exploit was already ‘cut in’ before its presence was announced; too late to do anything about it.

Other security loopholes have been closed though, so it’ll take a little bit of time for the iPhone Dev Team to adapt Ultrasn0w to work on iPhone 3GS. Sit tight and watch this space.
