vodafone-gatewayVodafone is about to launch a new plug-in box that’ll boost your mobile phone signal at home. The Vodafone Access Gateway plugs into your home broadband line giving you a localised burst of 3G signal and, of course, reliable access to all of Vodafone’s phone services. That means no more balancing on one leg holding a coat-hanger when trying to find the best signal spot.

The Vodafone Access Gateway is about the size of an ordinary router and can support up to four voice calls at the same time. It also prevents your neighbours, for example, from taking advantage of your little pocket of 3G; you’ll just need to register the mobile numbers you want to have linked into the service and no one else will be able to pinch your bandwidth.

“The Vodafone Access Gateway will boost indoor mobile phone coverage for customers who today, find they need to move around the rooms in their home to get a consistent signal strength,” says Ian Shepherd, Consumer Director, Vodafone UK. As an added bonus, it’ll send Electrosmog alarmists into a seizure from 500 yards away.

There is a catch – the price. It’s £160 for the Vodafone Access Gateway, which is rather steep. Vodafone is trying to sweeten the deal with the offer of getting it free as part of a £15 per month price plan or on a monthly charge of £5; however, you are essentially paying out because Vodafone hasn’t put up enough phone masts to cover your area, which may not go down too well. But if you’re stuck in a rural black spot, it may be worth the outlay.

Out July 1 | £160 or on contract | Vodafone Access Gateway

If you want a 3G signal on voda you have to buy your own network!

Well you have to admire their cheek!

Does this mean if I carry one of these with me abroad. As soon as I plug it into the Ethernet socket in my hotel room, I will be treated as if I am in the UK?

I highly doubt it. Although Vodafone would undoubtedly like to point out that they’ve just slashed roaming charges in Europe. A fact it somehow feels I must to be told about via text message every other day.

Canyou take it anywhere… not tried.. will do and update… but if like me you do not get good mobile reception at home this has been great for me… I have Orange busniess phone – No coverage, Vodaphone 1 – 2 Bars, depending upon the wind direction and what leg i am stood on… Plugged this in and pop.. full Bars.. – I now divert business calls to my personal mobile.. so this is the routed via the Access point, so i can use the one phone without any issues… So… was i happy i never got reception from 2 tested Mobile operators.. No.. Am i happy they did somthing about it… ?
