UPDATE: We’ve just confirmed that the Spotify Day Pass won’t get you access to the improved audio quality catalogue.
Spotify is rolling out CD quality audio streaming of all its tracks, offering high quality sound without the need to download ever again – but only for Premium subscribers.
Music streaming service Spotify has just announced that it’s to begin doubling the bitrate quality of the songs you can listen to from 160kb/s to a crystal clear 320kb/s using the Ogg Vorbis q9 codec. Initially, only the most popular Spotify tracks will be available in better sound quality, but Spotify says it’ll convert its whole catalogue over the next few weeks.

There is however, one large catch: to make use of the CD quality streaming, you’ll need to be a paid up Spotify Premium member. Free Spotify users won’t have the option, and along with the Premium-only API and mobile apps, it’s another incentive Spotify is offering if you fork out £9.99 a month.
Unfortunately, Day Pass users won’t be able to get access to it either, which is a shame as high quality sound would make Spotify even more tempting to hook up to your home hi-fi for parties and help yourself playlists, but we’ll keep you posted if that changes.
