Palm Pre has already created a stir in smartphone fields, but if it’s ever going to have the faintest chance of catching up with Apple, it’s going to need an awful lot more applications under its belt. Despite the openness of the Palm Pre webOS platform, the depressingly small number of webOS apps right now is due to the lack of webOS SDK (software development kit) which helps mobile developers on their way to creating top notch software. Luckily, Palm is nearly ready to launch one.
Palm has announced that a webOS SDK is on its way and should be released “by the end of this Summer”. The delay is down to software and developer services not being ready yet, and, judging by the comments on Palm’s developer blog post, it looks like there are any number of would-be Pre devs waiting in the wings; some of them are getting fed up with not being able to get their wares on to the Palm App Catalogue.
To help tackle the backlog, Palm will be expanding its early access program “to thousands of developers” and it’ll be appeasing Palm Pre early adopters by publishing more content as soon as possible. In other words, sit tight – by the time the Palm Pre reaches the UK, there may be a lot more to get excited about.
