e3-09-nielsenHalo: ODST and God Of War III were the game titles shown at E3, the world’s largest videogame trade show, that are most likely to be actually purchased by gamers, according to market research firm Nielsen’s “Video Game Tracking” survey.

The survey, which asks gamers what games they actually intend to pay money for, picked out Wii Sports Resort as the number three game.

The Nielsen chart shows up several interesting issues. Firstly, that platform exclusives still really matter. The top three will all be available for only one console each.

Secondly, there are some games that generated a huge “buzz” during E3, but remain absent: Modern Warfare 2 rests off the bottom of the list with only 27 per cent of gamers currently intending to buy. And Uncharted 2: Among Thieves only has 23 per cent of gamers ready to pay up for it.

Finally, it appears that E3 has had little effect on gamers purchasing intents. The report author said: “There were not massive spikes in consumer interest in purchasing from pre- to post-E3. Most [games] moved up or down 1-2 per cent at most, which is well within the margin of error.” If E3 can’t get gamers excited about a new game, how exactly are they making their purchasing decisions?

I am a big Halo fan and have pre-ordered this game, looking at the demo shown at E3 it looks good and can’t wait..

I take these were American gamers surveyed (as I guess the ones standing around Microsofts E3 booth), as I don’t know a single person even remotely interested in Halo ODST.

Seems strange that Uncharted 2 does not even appear on the survey, considering it was best game at E3.. Even stranger that Electric Pig didn’t bother to report that. Anyone would think Simon Monk had a gaming preference that’s washing off in what articles he chooses to write about, and what he chooses to ignore. The 700 Natal stories would sorta back that up..

  3. Simon Munk says:

MM, yes, I’m guessing it’s probably an American survey – as Nielsen is primarily a US-based company. But it’s a regular survey of gamers’ intent to purchase (and clearly gamers of all platforms).

BTW, MM, meet Poppa_P – he’s pre-ordered the game. So now you know at least “a single person” who is interested. Again, a survey of your friends, IMHO, isn’t quite as rigorous as that of hundreds of gamers as conducted by one of the largest and most well-established market research companies on the planet.

As to Uncharted 2 being the “best game at E3″. That isn’t something we could really “report” on. That’s an opinion. Your opinion. We have already reported that Uncharted 2 is leading the nominations in the Game Critics Awards.
