The Garmin Foretrix GPS devices are out later this Summer

Garmin’s just outed two new Garmin Foretrex wrist GPS trackers, the Garmin Foretrex 401 and 301, and they’re ideal for any off road activity from mountain biking to snowboarding.

The last Garmin GPS watch we saw was aimed squarely at the jogging crowd with its pedometer and heart rate measuring skills, but this pair of Garmin Foretrex GPS gizmos are designed for just about any activity you can add the word “extreme” to without sniggering.

Both waterproof Garmin Foretrex models are WAAS friendly for superb GPS accuracy that won’t drop even in canyons or tall forests. You can chart your route, and then simply turn on the TracBack feature for reverse directions. You can store 20 routes, as well 500 way points for points of interest you might find.

What divides the two? The Garmin Foretrex 401 takes things a little more advanced with an electronic compass on board, as well as a barometer, although takes a hit with battery life at 17 hours per charge compared to the 301’s 18, off of a pair of AAAs.

Both Garmin Foretrex GPS gadgets are out later this Summer in the US for $199 and $249, so if you’re an outdoors enthusiast who walks on the wild side, you might want to pick one up on import. What we’re really looking forward to though? When this technology is standard in ski passes and bike handle bars.
