The iPhone 3G S may have been unlocked before it has even officially been released. iPhone arch-hackers the Dev Team have been working on a new hack which they claim should unlock any version of the iPhone, including the new model.
The iPhone 3G S doesn’t hit the shelves until Friday, but the Dev Team are confident that their unlocking hack will be able to cope with any changes to the hardware or the iPhone 3.0 software. Unlocking refers to the practice of removing the checks which tie the iPhone to a particular mobile carrier – eg O2 in the UK.
The original and 3G iPhones can be unlocked using the tool yellowsn0w. The new hack – dubbed ultrasn0w – is claimed to work with any version of the iPhone, including the new iPhone 3G S. The Dev Team won’t reveal how the hack works at the moment for fear that Apple will try to pre-emptively patch the iPhone 3.0 OS and stop it in its tracks.
There is no guarantee that it will work, of course, but the Dev Team have got the better of every other iPhone software and hardware release so we have to say the odds are with them. No word yet on a Jailbreak for the iPhone 3G S but, again, it seems likely.
