brutal_legend_recordHundreds of fans got together last weekend to set a new Guinness World Record, all in the name of EA’s upcoming new metal-themed game, Brutal Legend. 440 long-haired, sweaty revellers played air guitar simultaneously during the 2009 Download festival and scored some fresh publicity for the game, which is due out in October. Or rather, Rocktober.

Brutal Legend is definitely up there on our games radar: it’s designed by Tim Schafer, who lent his considerable talents to classics such as Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle, Grim Fandango and Psychonauts; it stars Jack Black; and it features the voices of Ozzy Osbourne, Lita Ford and Lemmy.

Even so, we’re still suspicious of how EA can find literally hundreds of fans for a game that is still months away from release. Our cynicism isn’t helped by this statement from Kerrang FM’s Christian Stevenson: “That was one of the raddest jams I’ve ever been involved with. The crowd played their air guitars better than Eddie Van Halen! Then they destroyed ’em good and proper. Who cares, right? They can go to the air guitar shop and get another one. Sick to the infinity of sickness! I want a crowd like that at every gig I’m at. Awesometacular – air guitar world records rule!”

Shortly after, representatives of Mr Stevenson admitted that they shouldn’t have let him have so many sugary drinks that close to his bed time.

I don’t know which “world record” is more lame. This one or the kid who got the highest score in Guitar Hero. I’m sure U2 could easily break this record if the Edge could just get their audience to sorta jam with him with their air guitars. On another note, I love Jack Black. I can’t wait for the game to come out. This one’s for Wonderboy!
