Opera Unite is a new service from the popular internet browser, which lets you turn your home computer into a web server quickly and simply. But even better, it’ll let you stream your music library over the internet and through a browser, to anywhere with net access.
Opera Unite is a new application built into the Opera browser which will let you make your computer and its contents available securely, remotely and through a browser. The web server feature might be worth a look for anyone paying through the nose for web hosting of their sites, but it’s the ability to stream your music via Opera Unite, complete with track jumping and playlists, that makes it stand out.
Until Spotify drops the desktop client, it’s an ideal solution for anyone wanting to chill out with their own music collection and playlists at work (It will run with any “modern” browser, says Opera, and we’ve confirmed that that includes Internet Explorer).
Opera Unite’s file sharing service should also make sending large files easier than ever. It generates a URL of the file on your PC you want to share with someone: all you have to do is send them the link and they can start downloading before you’ve even finished uploading it, making it ideal to use with anyone put off by FTP clients. You can access them from “ANY Modern Browser” according to Opera.
I tried on the PS3’s webbrowser, and it worked a treat.
