Got yourself a Wii MotionPlus add on already, but can’t wait to try it out on Wii Sports Resort? It’s not out until next month, but we’ve taken the game for a spin, so come see what’s in store in our hands-on video!
Wii MotionPlus launched to little fanfare on Friday, but it’s hardly a surprise: the game everyone’s waiting to try it out with, Wii Sports Resort, isn’t out until next month. We’ve had a play today though, and even though it’s not going to be free this time round, it’s shaping up to be well worth the cost.
Wii Sports Resort packs in far more sports than the original, and thanks to MotionPlus, requires a lot more accuarcy in your flails and swings to truly excel at it. We dived straight into the skydiving game shown off at E3, and it’s both bonkers and intuitive. You tilt forward to drop faster and grab hold of others to shape up for photos, and pull back up to slow down and increase your time in the air.
Next up we tried out archery, and while it’s ludicrously easy on Beginner setting, up the difficulty and you’ll soon be struggling to hit the moving target as it moves between boards. You use the Z button on the nunchuk to zoom in and match your circle of view on to the bulls eye.

Truth be told, the archery game doesn’t give you much sense of the improvements Wii MotionPlus offers in accuracy, but a couple of games in Wii Sports Resort definitely do. Frisbee is one of the stranger activities on offer: the aim is to throw the disc in a zone on the beach where a dog will catch it and fetch it back to you. But the angle and direction you throw it in is picked up well, and you can even slice it vertically, though the canine will struggle to catch those.
We reckon dueling is the multiplayer game that’ll cause Wii Sports Resort mania though. Like boxing in the original Wii Sports, it’s a frantic 1-on-1, but this time you’re clasping the WiiMote like a sword, slashing, jabbing and parrying like you’d always hoped you’d be able to in a Wii game. Can we have this with a lightsaber please, Lucas Arts?
Wii Sports Resort is out for you to try for yourself from 24 July, but see some of the games in action in our hands-on video right here, right now!
