gmail_mobile_smGoogle has given Android users a leg up when it comes to accessing Google Mail via their phones by revamping the way Gmail looks to the Android browser.

Google included a GMail application in its pack of applications for Google-branded Android phones and there is a simple GMail app for the iPhone. Now Google has decided to upgrade the mobile GMail experience, but has avoided a native app in favour of a major reworking of the web interface, tailored for touchscreen.

The new ‘app’ doesn’t need to be installed – it just works as soon as you log in to GMail via your Android web browser or iPhone Safari. Providing you have the right phone, you will be redirected to a new homepage that uses HTML5 to produce a slick user interface which behaves like a ‘real’ email app.

The improved web app willl work on both Android and the iPhone, but any Android phone with a keypad will also get the benefit of keyboard shortcuts, just like on the PC. You can even use the mail app offline on Android, thanks to Google Gears.

Doesn’t Android already have a Gmail app?? why would anyone use the browser to access their mail when they have a app built right in there??
Unless it’s something to do with varyiation of the android OS as i believe they are offering it to some mobile cariers with full google integration, and some completely without all the google branding. Still doesn’t seem to make much sense to me though.
