Twitter verifying celeb tweets

Want to know if that celebrity you’re following on Twitter really is who they tweet they are? Now you can: Twitter has begun rolling out its verification program, slapping a badge on celebrity feeds it knows are official.

Twitter has said before that it was planning a verification service to distinguish real Twittering celebs and companies from impostors (potentially as a way to make money), and now it’s here, for individuals at least. While businesses will have to wait, as of yesterday, Twitter has been adding “Verified Account” labels to certain feeds, like actor Ashton Kutchter‘s.

Strangely, Twitter has been verifying certain Twitter streams, like that of Michael Arrington of TechCrunch, without actually reaching out and confirming he is who he says he is. Twitter can probably get away with that while it’s verifying only a select few peeps (no British celebrities, including Stephen Fry, have been verified yet), but it might want to start doing a bit more research some time soon. We give it a few weeks before a fake Twitter feed gets the seal of approval by accident, which should lead to as much amusement as possible in 140 characters or under.
