Sony Rolly

Talk about your all-time gimmicks. A rolling MP3 player with built-in speaker that ‘dances’ on your desk to the music? Sony, we thought better of you!

Okay, we admit that when you first clap eyes on the Sony Rolly you’re enchanted by its mystique. What is it? An MP3 player? A robot? It’s actually both. Unfortunately, it’s not very good at being either. As an MP3 player it has 1GB of storage, which is barely enough to hold Peter Andre’s entire back catalogue (Mysterious Girl, erm…). The built-in soft-dome speakers no great shakes, either.

Yes, there are neat touches, like the ability to hook the Rolly up to a PC, so you can choreograph his moves to tracks. And thanks to the Bluetooth, Rolly’s also capable of a bit of music streaming, sucking up tunes onto its 1GB of internal memory, or streaming songs from a Bluetooth-equipped mobile or music player, before blasting them through its built-in speakers. But that’s pretty much where the fun ends.

If this is meant to be a music player, well we want more storage, better audio, and at least a screen. If it’s meant to be a robot? Well, we expect more from our droids than just the ability to roll about a bit. We’d hesitate to even call that dancing!

Is this meant to be a robot or MP3 player? We’re not sure. Either way the Sony Rolly doesn’t do a very good impression of either. Save your money for something more substantial.
