The iPhone 3G S is to be Oleophobic – which we were surprised to learn does not mean “scared of cookies”. No, what this means is that the new batch of iPhones won’t be quite as prone to picking up fingerprints.
The iPhone 3G S is brand spanking new, and Apple would like to keep it looking that way as long as possible. To that end, they have coated the new iPhones in a special material that repels the oil on your hands that leaves greasy fingerprints. Soon, eating a bag of chips while reading Twitter will be a practical reality.
This ‘oleophobic’ material (“lacking affinity for oils” – thanks, dictionary) means that you will no longer have to keep wiping your iPhone with a slightly damp cloth in order to keep it grease free. Oils will find it harder to cling to the surface of the phone, so just a quick wipe with any soft cloth will keep the iPhone 3G S looking shiny and new.
