HD Traffic, safety alerts, fuel prices, Google Search, advanced lane guidance, IQ Routes, Map Share, 3D Map View: these are just some of the seemingly endless features that TomTom has ploughed into the Go 940 Live.
Admittedly, the 940 Live doesn’t come cheap at around £350. But TomTom compensates for the wallet ache with a soothing tonic of elaborate, high-tech extras. Taking pride of place among those several million features is the High-Definition Traffic service with live – sorry, LIVE over-the-air alerts. You see TomTom tracks and regularly updates the movements of the nation’s mobile phones to keep you up to date on back spots.
The 940’s GPRS web connection is a long way from 3G, as you can imagine, but it’s just right for keeping you up to date with the local road conditions, and Live’s other services, such as Google Search locations, and finding the cheapest petrol in the vicinity.
In use, the traffic alerts proved extremely accurate on that lovely 4.3-inch screen, with clear instructions from the automaton voice and clean illustrations on screen. Maps, meanwhile, are functional, serving up all the detail you could need.
Adding to the expense, though, is the £8 monthly fee that TomTom charges for its Live service (after the three-month trial). You’ll have to spend plenty of time avoiding the M25 if you want to justify that. The only other downside would be the aesthetics. The TomToms haven’t really changed there style over the years and they’re starting to look a bit dull compared to some of today’s slender units.
Still, it may be bland-looking, and pricey, but the TomTom 940 Go Live is undeniably good at what it does. Sexy? Hell no. Indispensable? You bet.
