After some promising rumours, it was a bit of a surprise when Sony did not announce a PS3 Slim at its E3 press conference. So what about all those leaked photos then – were they all just an elaborate hoax or is Sony keeping one card close to its chest? In a recent interview, Sony’s hardware man, John Koller, refused to shed light on the issue, but not in the usual ‘We don’t comment on rumour or speculation’ way. Intriguing.
Koller actually had some interesting things to say about how leaks affect Sony’s operation. This year’s E3 was a bit of a disaster in terms of everyone knowing exactly what Kaz was going to pull out his pocket before he even walked on stage – the PSP Go. And although there’d been plenty of rumour and leakages before then, it was actually Sony’s own Qore digital publication that spilled the beans in the end.
How does Koller feel about the PS3 Slim news? “I’d love to live in a world with fewer leaks and more meat,” he told Ars Technica. “If [the coverage] focuses more on leaks or what may or may not happen then yes, there is a certain amount of frustration.”
Although leaks are currently a big issue at Sony, it’s interesting that he uses the word twice, even though PS3 Slim was still lingering in the rumour category. Could we still see a PS3 Slim before Christmas? We’d reckon so, although don’t get your hopes up for a price cut in today’s economic climate.
