The HTC Touch HD, like George Bush as president, is extremely powerful, just really, really annoying.

HTC Touch HD

Mmm. The HTC Touch HD is a pretty stylish phone, if a little bit pokey, but anyone expecting the high quality associated with, well, HD, will be greatly disappointed.

Yes, the HTC Touch HD is highly specced and extremely powerful, delivering music videos, films, streaming and internet browsing on the 3.8-inch touchscreen. There’s even a five-megapixel camera, GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth… the list goes on. But all the specs in the world can’t make this what it wants to be: an iPhone beater. It’d be like putting a FIAT in a race with a Ferrari.

Why so bad? Well, behind the swanky exterior lies a nasty secret. The two most feared words in a mobile phone user’s vocabulary: Windows Mobile. Not even the glossy TouchFLO 3D interface will help you navigate the thousands of minuscule menu options, acting with a sort of disinterested shrug to all but the mightiest of prods from the included stylus (thank God for the stylus!).

There are some neat, ahem, touches to the HTC Touch HD, like the accelerometer. But there’s not enough software that makes use of them. And then to add insult to injury, HTC went and handicapped it further with a high price tag. Why HTC? Why?
