iPhone is still very much the mobile platform of the hour, as you can probably tell by last night’s excitement. So, you may be wondering, what’s in store for the touchscreen handset on the gaming front? Well, how about a bit of Fallout 3, post-apocalyptic adventuring? Yes, impossible as it sounds, Bethesda is already working on bringing the nuclear shooter to the smartphone.
“I think that the world of Fallout is unique enough that it could work on any platform,” Bethesda’s Todd Howard told Joystiq. “I think some of the things we do like VATS, [...] could translate to any platform, particularly the iPhone. I wouldn’t be surprised if it does happen one day.”
Not that it’s going to be easy, mind. The scale of Fallout 3’s open world makes a number PCs wince, so to shrink it down to an iPhone sized package is going to be a real challenge. “The iPhone versions that we’ve designed and said ‘Ehh, we don’t think we’re going to do that right now,’ there are … there are a lot of them,” admitted Howard.
At least that means there is definitely work being done on the Fallout 3 iPhone project and that the makers won’t be happy with the usual half-arsed mobile phone mod. And clearly iPhone is being increasingly seen as a bona fide gaming platform for serious games. We’re keeping our fingers crossed for Bethesda making a breakthrough in the near future.
