YouTube XL, a large screen version of YouTube designed to be controlled and watched on widescreen tellies and massive monitors, has just rolled out. Grab your Bluetooth remote and settle back on the sofa to watch pandas sneezing from afar like never before!
We’ve enjoyed being able to watch YouTube videos in HD, but now you can make the whole experience even more like old-timey TV with YouTube XL. It’s a version of the video sharing site optimised for large screens, with giant, visible fonts and control buttons.
It’s ideal if you have a media centre hooked up to your TV, or use a huge monitor like the Apple Cinema Display, and YouTube XL even offers a continuous play feature, which simply plays back all clips on a topic one after the other without the need for pesky mouse clicks. There’s another great reason to celebrate YouTube X tooL: it’s stripped out all the incoherent comments that accompany most videos too.
YouTube XL is yet another step towards blurring the boundaries between regular TV and internet video, so it comes as no surprise to find that some premium content isn’t available through the YouTube XL interface. But YouTube’s just thrown the gauntlet down: Hulu‘s going to have to try real hard when it launches over here.
