m2_cardMobile phone maker Sony Ericsson has decided to cut its losses and scrap the M2 memory card format. When the recently unveiled Sony Ericsson Satio, Aino and Yari were spotted to have MicroSD card storage instead of proprietary M2 format, warning bells were ringing. Now Sony Ericsson has confirmed to that it is moving away from the less compatible storage system.

Upcoming, unannounced Sony Ericsson handsets are also believed to support the more popular MicroSD card format. This along with Sony’s decision to drop UMD from the PSP Go implies that the Japanese tech giant is finally starting to move away from obstructive proprietary formats. And it’ll have our blessing too.

Sony Ericsson also caused some surprise when it joined the universal charger movement and swap from dedicated Sony Ericsson chargers to widely available micro USB.

I hope they don’t drop Memory Stick formats, as the write performance benefits over SD and MicroSD would mean a backwards step in performance of Cybershot cameras and other MS products.

Don’t worry, I don’t think Memory Stick is going anywhere. It’s in the new range of Sony Alpha DSLRs and the new Cyber-shot DSC-HX1.
