Low power eInk displays are nothing new in e-readers like the Amazon Kindle, but we could be seeing the technology coming to laptops very soon, letting you work outdoors in the sunlight or read your PC like a paperback!
Currently, laptops use LCD screens which are just a tad tricky to see outdoors, but Pixel Qi is about to debut a 10.1 inch eInk screen for netbooks that solves that major hurdle to true mobile computing.
Called the 3qi, the eInk laptop screen offers three modes, a low power black and white one for reading documents, and two colour modes, indoor and out, which will allow for proper web surfing and video playback.
Pixel Qi says the eInk panels should start appearing in netbooks by the end of the year, but we can’t wait for them to debut in convertible tablet netbooks like the Asus Eee PC T91. Turn the screen round, fold it down and power on the black and white eInk display and you’ve just killed the Kindle right there. Pixel Qi is showing off its wares at Computex in Taiwan this week, so we’ll keep our eyes out for any more details.
