A Kindle e-reader with a colour screen won’t be unveiled anytime soon: Amazon’s CEO has just admitted that the Kindle won’t be making the jump from black and white for “multiple years” to come.
News agency AFP tried to quiz Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos on Kindle sales figures, but the online retail boss wouldn’t let slip how many Kindle units have been sold. What he did have to say was much more disappointing though: when asked if a colour Kindle was next, Bezos was anything but optimistic. “I know it’s multiple years. I don’t know how many years but it’s years,” he said. “I’ve seen the colour displays in the laboratory and I can assure you they’re not ready for prime time.”

Er, try telling that to Fujitsu, Jeff. It looks to us like it managed it already: all Amazon would need to do would be to whack in a 3G connection for over the air downloads and there you go.
Doubtless it’s not actually as simple as that, but a colour screen that’s easy on the eye and low on battery drain could well be what’s needed to get more publishers and readers onboard with the Kindle. Or, say, releasing the Kindle internationally. We’re just thinking out loud here.
